You see a big wave forming in the distance, and you feel ready for it. You turn your back to it for a moment, expecting it to carry you to shore as you prepare to jump—
But you don’t catch it at the right second. And the force of the break pushes you under water, leaves you frantically looking for the surface as the shells and coral and sand burn your skin. When you finally come up, you breathe deeply. Saltwater burning your throat, eyes bloodshot and stinging. And you wonder how something so beautiful could be so cruel.
